LANSING, Mich. — The Russ Mawby Signature Service Projects bring hundreds of AmeriCorps members to various Michigan communities for a day of intensive service. Mid-Michigan AmeriCorps Program Directors have selected Williamston’s Camp Pa-Wa-Pi and will take over the camp for a day, Friday May 17, clearing the winter cobwebs away in anticipation of their Summer 2019 camps.
Former commissioner and chair of Michigan Community Service Commission, Russ Mawby believed in collective action for the common good, that people could make a difference. In his interview for Our State of Generosity, he shared “Everyone in America can be a philanthropist, you may not have a big bank balance or the possibility of giving large sums of funds, but all of us can all give something. But more importantly, we can give of our heart and of our self in a variety of ways. We can give time, talent, or service in the community to enrich the lives of people.” Mid-Michigan AmeriCorps members will be making a difference by giving their time, talent and service at Camp Pa-Wa-Pi and helping with a variety of projects including: beautifying open spaces, painting camp structures, and clearing hiking trails.
Camp Pa-Wa-Pi is an outdoor adventure camp located just east of Williamston on 52 wooded acres along the Red Cedar River. At Camp Pa-Wa-Pi, children of all background benefit from the power of a positive mentor, the confidence that comes from trying, and the development of healthy, long-lasting friendships. Day Camp Programs include sports, adventure, teen, preschool, leadership and additional specialty camps! Camp Pa-Wa-Pi supports and encourages youth to be active, to learn, and to appreciate nature.
AmeriCorps is a national service program designed to strengthen citizenship and the ethic of service by engaging thousands of Americans on a full-time or part-time basis to help communities address their toughest challenges. The Corporation for National and Community Service administers AmeriCorps at the federal level and works in partnership with states to develop service programs and create a community-based national service network. The Michigan Community Service Commission is the administrative agent for Michigan's AmeriCorps.
