Drivers have been noticing more dead animals than normal on the side of the road, but the number of animals hit hasn't increased, but instead the number of people clearing them off has.
That's because the Ingham County Sheriff's Office's program "DART" was cut at the beginning of the year.
The program used volunteers to pick up deer and other roadkill across Ingham county.
Now that responsibility is split between the road commission, MDOT on state roads, and the DNR in chronic wasting disease zones. (You can find that map here.)
But some drivers don't feel like they're being taken away at all.
That's because in most cases, they aren't actually being removed. Instead they're being pulled to the side of the road or into a ditch nearby.
That means they'll still be visible, and the smell--still there.
