Road workers ask for space, slow traffic while repairing potholes

LANSING, Mich. - — As our weather warms up, the potholes pop up, and road crews will be out and about.

That brings out this warning for drivers: steer clear of those workers.

They say they hope to make it home every night.

And that starts with you as a driver: slowing down and moving over for them in construction zones.

"It takes a special person to go out there and have cars driving by at 50, 60 miles per hour and be able to do their job correctly," said Michigan Department of Transportation spokesman Aaron Jenkins.

Fixing potholes, or any roadwork for that matter, is a job that often goes unappreciated.

Each day, road workers across the state risk their lives trying to make our commutes a little smoother.

"Spending some time out here, you definitely have an appreciation for the motorists that move over, slow down and are observant to the signs we have out here," said Ben Hodges, a MDOT Maintenance Supervisor.

Workers from MDOT say that those drivers are too few and far between.

"Close calls happen quite frequently," said Hodges. "There are so many distracted drivers out there, driving too fast, or not paying attention."
