Road salt doesn't work in extreme cold

LANSING, Mich. — Speaking of salt, areas on a lot of sidewalks and roads are still slick right now because it's just too cold for road salt to work.

The problem stems from the way salt works to melt ice.

Salt water has a much lower freezing point than fresh water.

So adding salt to ice will typically melt that ice but only to a certain premature normally around 10 to 20 degrees. Once the temperatures get lower than that salt becomes ineffective.

Road crews will be putting down a mixture of sand and salt instead but you still need to take it slow if you have to go anywhere.
