Remains found in the Country of Kirabati, or Gilbert Islands, are those of a Michigan man who was a World War II airman.

The airman, 2nd Lt. Donald Underwood, was aboard a bomber known as "Miss Bee Haven" shortly before it crashed into the Pacific Ocean in 1944, according to the Associated Press.

Underwood was from Detroit, Michigan.

Other victims of the crash were found and buried during WW II; Underwood's remains were found this past June by History Flight, based out of Florida. They were turned over to the government.

History Flight is a group that searches for remains of those killed in U.S. wars, the AP says. The family was notified last week.
