The red cross is making a desperate plea for blood donations.
The organizers leaders say for the past two months donations have fallen short of expectations.
Summer shortages especially around independence day are normal but this year's shortage is critical.
Red cross says the amount of donations fell short by more than 60,000.
"One of the reasons for the shortages is there are fewer volunteer hosted blood drives at work, churches and other community gatherings," said Tim Kulman from Red Cross Communications.
Lansing is no exception.
Kulman says, "In some cities, hospitals have had to cancel elective surgeries due to the shortages. Hospitals are using more blood due to more complex procedures like chemotherapy, organ transplants and heart surgeries. They each require large amounts of blood."
