JACKSON, Mich. — It's been 10 months since Jackson City Council Member Kelsey Heck was appointed to represent the fifth ward.
Last June former council member Andrew Frounfelker resigned following assault charges for alleged domestic abuse.
Council selected Heck to fill the open seat.
One of the candidates for the vacancy submitted recall language against the appointed member.
Susan Murdie is telling Fox 47 Heck is not the ward's choice.
This September she plans to collect signatures to call for a special election next spring.
Murdie, who ran for the fifth ward seat twice, says Heck is not serving the interest of residents.
“The recall language is simply saying that we have a traffic circle that Kelsey Heck voted for and us residents all spoke out against it,” Murdie explained.
Heck is speaking out against those claims, saying she is working on behalf of the fifth ward.
“I'm really proud of the work that we've managed to do,” Heck said.
“I mean getting state and federal dollars for roads projects is huge.”
Heck's term runs through 2021.
Murdie needs to collect 240 signatures from fifth ward residents to initiate a special election.
