A new reading program is teaching important skills to young kids.

STEAM Ahead kicked off Friday at the Wharton Center on the campus of Michigan State University. STEAM stands for science, technology, engineering, arts, and math.

The program is introducing those concepts to kids in grades 1 through 3 by giving them related books like Rosie Revere - Engineer, Ada Twist - Scientist and Iggy Peck - Architect.

Program Facilitator Brindley Byrd said, "It's a great, well, diverse group of people all coming to learn about a great group of kids. Rosie, and Ada, and Iggy, they're all great little kids talking about and thinking about what they're going to be when they grow up."

The program has handed out 1,200 books to young readers.
