LANSING, Mich. — Thursday, a Senate hearing took place on Raise the Age, a bill package that would change the age a person can be tried as an adult from 17-years-old to 18.
The Senate Committee on Judiciary and Public Safety passed a bill package that will now be sent to the floor for approval from both the House and Senate.
Currently, Michigan law allows a 17-year-old to be tried and treated as an adult in the criminal justice system.
Michigan is one of only four states in the country that have this law.
The bill package would include funding for services for juveniles that would now include 17-year-olds and would prohibit juveniles who are under arrest from being confined or transported with adult criminals.
However, the House tabled prohibiting 17-year-olds from being placed in an adult prison.
