Questions surround I-94 semi-truck crash

A semi-truck driver is recovering after surviving a terrible crash on I-94 in Jackson last week, but questions remain as to what led to the crash.

A spokesperson from the Michigan Department of Transportation told Fox 47 that construction along that stretch of highway doesn't appear to have contributed to the crash, but the police investigation is ongoing.

Surveillance video of the crash is tough to watch. The semi-truck driver veering off I-94, smashing into two trees. The cab; decimated and unrecognizable. Miraculously, the driver survived.

"It's posted speed limit is 60. You've got semis going through there a lot faster than that and regular vehicles just not even slowing down so it's just making things worse," said Don Collins, a resident of Jackson County.

Collins said he drives that part of the highway near exit 141 westbound every morning. It's a construction zone and he said that it's become a death trap.

"Right now the way they've got it set up with the crossovers and pinch points going through there. It's really, really bad. You got to watch it right now. You've got semis going into the left lane all the way through there and in some spots, you're right against the guard rail," Collins said.

The multi-million dollar I-94 Corridor Project is being done to improve infrastructure along that area. It's about a 9-mile stretch of roadwork that goes from the M-60 interchange to Sargent road.

MDOT spokesperson, Aaron Jenkins said it does not appear that construction had anything to do with the crash.

"I would say that it didn't have anything to do with the work zone, but as always we're telling people that you should drive like you work so that we keep people working in the work zone safe," Jenkins said.

The Public Safety Director for Blackman Leoni Township Police said the 41-year-old driver from Houston, TX doesn't remember what happened.

"I would like to see maybe some law enforcement out there trying to slow people down," Collins said.

The I-94 Corridor Project will be completed sometime in November.
