LANSING, Mich. — One woman is speaks out on Thursday after she found a tub of kittens on the side of the road in Jackson County.
Rebecca Bowman says she is frustrated with the animal services because they wouldn't take in the kittens that she found.
Bowman tells News 10 that she reached out to Jackson County Animal Shelters to help her take the kittens and they say they are both at full capacity.
This was also during the same time as their puppy adoption event we told you about earlier in the week.
Where the Jackson County Animal Shelter transported over 20 puppies from Mississippi to their facility.
"It was frustrating when I called and they said they were full and then a day later we find out, oh you just took this whole shipment of animals from out of state instead of helping our local community here," said Bowman.
Bowman felt like she wasn't getting answers from the local shelters so they recommended that she reach out to a local rescue group and they were taken care of from there.
"(I) Got a hold of Rescue Me Jackson and she set up an emergency vet appointment for the three kittens."
All of the kittens are now safe and in the care of a foster home and rescue group.
I spoke with the vet that took in the kittens and they say this is a very common problem in Jackson County.
"The bottom line is that there is just not enough homes in Jackson County for all of these cats," Melissa Owings from Kibby Park Animal Hospital.
Fox 47 reached out to the Jackson County Animal Shelter they couldn't meet in person, but told us over the phone why they couldn't accept the kittens.
"We can't put cats in dog cages, so it makes sense, the puppy room was empty that we brought in animals and that actually helped move more cats, out it's a strategic plan to generate more traffic to the shelter and get more animals adopted, it was successful," said Lydia Sattler, Director of Animal Services Jackson County.
They also mentioned that they would have to kill cats if they took in more than they could handle.
"If we take in every single cat that comes to us and we don't have space the alternative is to euthanize and we don't want to do that, that's why we practice managed intake, which means we don't take in more than we can care for," said Sattler.
Fox 47 also went to Cascades Humane Society and they mentioned some of the steps you can take if you end up finding some stray cats.
"Reach out to area rescues but we also suggest if you are interested in maybe keeping them for us, we would help you pay for that so we would give you all of the supply's you need for those kittens and let you keep them for a certain amount of time," said Heather Leszczynski, Executive Director Cascades Humane Society.
She added, "while they grow big and strong and they will be ready for their spay and neuter surgeries".
Both shelters mentioned that there are multiple organizations that can help with stray cat or kittens.
