JACKSON, Mich. (WSYM) - Roughly 50 protesters gathered outside of a Planned Parenthood in Jackson.

The Michigan protest held Saturday was among hundreds nationwide in an effort to "Defend Planned Parenthood" .

Protester Liz Harrington says standing in a peaceful protest for Planned Parenthood is necessary.

"They really helped me," she said.

Since 19 years old, Planned Parenthood was Harrington's only means of healthcare.

Healthcare which saved her life.

"They found precancerous cells on my cervix," Harrington said. " They had to remove them."

Harrington is one of many who gathered outside of Jackson's Planned Parenthood Saturday morning - hopeful for it's future.

Terri McKinnon, protest organizer, agrees.

"We have a situation right now where we have a government that wants to defund Planned Parenthood .... and doesn't have an affordable replacement," she said.

Another group also gathered to protest - hoping the organization will close.

One anti-abortion protester says America is killing their babies.

Another protester said our society needs to change our laws.

While both sides are passionate about their cause, Harrington says there's more to Planned Parenthood than meets the eye.

"We need to keep Planned Parenthood open," she mentions. "They provide more than just abortions."
