EAST LANSING, Mich. — Prosecutors have dropped a fraud charge against a MSU professor after a jury failed to reach a verdict in the case.

Ning XI was director of MSU's Robotics and Automation Laboratory.

Federal prosecutors accused him of collecting more than $180,000 in travel payments based on fraudulent documents.

XI was also accused of similar conduct at another institute.

A jury in federal court in Grand Rapids couldn't reach a verdict leading the judge to declare a mistrial.
