LANSING, Mich. — Lansing police have identified a suspect in the murder of a woman and her young son.

Douglas Hill is charged with murdering Danielle Steiner and her son Aubrey Hall in June of 2018. (Lasing Police Department)Douglas Hill, 55, of Lansing has been arraigned on two counts of open murder and two weapons charges.

Chief Mike Yankowski of the Lansing Police Department held a press conference Monday morning where he announced that he believes Hill killed Danielle Steiner and her son Aubrey Hall in June of 2018. That's when they were last seen, though they weren't reported missing until August of that year.

The remains of the 34-year-old mom and her five-year-old son were found July 1st at a home on Loa Street in Lansing, next door to her last known address. Chief Yankowski said that Hill lived on the same block, but wouldn't say if he lived in the house where the remains were found, although neighbors Monday said Hill did live there.

'I seen him walking up and down the street. Going to the store and stuff, but I didn't know him personally," said Darlene Nicklosovich, a neighbor. "Finding the bones, that was really scary cause I know both the mother and son and they were sweet people. She worked hard to provide for her little boy."

Yankowski described Steiner and Hill as "acquaintances." Police aren't releasing the cause of death for now.

Chief Yankowski said tips from the community led them to Hill. They also worked with many law enforcement agencies across the country to get him into custody.

"I can tell you that the course of the investigation lead us to North Carolina because he was in North Carolina at that point in time, so we needed to talk to him," the chief said.

Hill was eventually arrested in Monroe County in Michigan on unrelated charges before being sent back to Lansing.

"I hope justice prevails and I really hope that if he was the one who did it that he gets what he deserves," said Art Phillips, another neighbor.

Hill is being held at the Ingham County jail. He's scheduled to be back in court on August 2nd for a probable cause hearing. His preliminary hearing is set for August 9. News 10 and wilx.com will keep you updated on this developing story.
