A local lawmaker is pushing to allow certain bars in Michigan to stay open later than they do right now.
However, this would apply only to the Detroit area.
Right now the words "last call" ring out just before 2 a.m. across the state.
But East Lansing Senator Curtis Hertel Junior wants to change the state law to allow Detroit bars to stay open until 4 a.m. on weekends and holidays.
Hertel says the changes are a way for the city to compete and make it more appealing than others that have later closing times.
Some bars in places like Chicago already don't close until 4 a.m.
Keep in mind though only certain bars within downtown Detroit would be able to participate.
They would also have to pay $10,000 dollars a year to extend their hours and most of that money would go to the police for increased patrols.
The bill is getting mixed reactions as some people are concerned about public safety while others think it's a great way to increase business.
The next step for the bill will be a committee hearing.
