LANSING, Mich. — The biggest worry right now is that you overwork your furnace trying to keep the house warm in sub-zero temperatures.
Dennis Wissner with ARI Serve Heating and Conditioning suggests having your furnace checked by a serviceman once a year.
Chances are you won't be able to schedule an appointment now, but you can replace the filter before the really low temps set in.
Wissner also says to make your furnace run more efficiently, turn down the heat when you leave.
Do not turn it off.
You also need to make sure your furnace vent is clear of snow.
It's usually a plastic pipe that comes out of the side or back of the house.
If it gets clogged, it could push carbon monoxide into the home.
