Power outage has locals flocking to hotels

Posted

"My house, no power means no water, no heat, nothing," Donna Daly said.

Daly says it's been rough without power. She had to boil water on a gas stove to wash up for work today and last night it was hard to keep warm.
"I built a fire all night last night, kept adding logs onto the stove to stay warm," Daly said.

But this morning when she found out her power wouldn't be back until 11 p.m. on Saturday, she decided to just check into the Hampton Inn in Delta Township. Where other people have gotten the same idea:

"I thought we'd better get the kids get some heat and get some water for the children and the wife," Ryan Charbonneau said.

"Shower, wi-fi, just being able to have a safe and secure to rest and to take care of my kids," Liana Bennett said.

The hotel manager Noel Johnson says they have 86 rooms at the Hampton Lansing West. And they sold out the night of the storm and tonight as well. The majority of the guests being locals without power.

"In the hotel world, it's a pretty decent pick up out of nowhere," Johnson said.

But if you don't want to shell out the cold hard cash for a hotel room the next couple days, you don't need to look any further. Because the fire station in Meridian Township is opening up its doors... And providing shelter.

"If people are holding on in their home that doesn't have heat, they might want to think about coming here,” Fire Chief Fred Cowper said. “It's certainly going to be more comfortable, especially if they have children too."

Chief Cowper says they're providing heat, food, hot showers and beds to people who've lost their power and are stuck in the cold.

"We will make it as comfortable as we possibly can because you know, it's a tough situation that they're in," Chief Cowper said.

He says they should be able to host around 20 people and they have a backup plan in case more need help.
