LANSING, Mich. — Mail carriers across the nation and in mid-Michigan will be picking up more than just mail on their routes this weekend.

The state says one in seven people living in mid-Michigan have trouble finding food and this time is critical for donations since many children will lose access to school meals during the summer.

To combat that, mail carriers will be collecting non-perishable food for those families.

It's part of the annual Letter Carriers' Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive.

The food drive is in its 27th year.

Food collected by postal workers during the drive will be delivered to the Greater Lansing Food Bank.

Those who want to donate can leave boxed or canned goods by their mailbox and mail carriers will collect food as they make their rounds.

All donations must be placed in bags.

The Greater Lansing Food Bank will then deliver the food to families in need.

Paper bags were distributed earlier this week for the event, but if a resident did not receive one any bag will do.
