PORTLAND, Mich. — Sunday's weather is Monday's problem in Portland.
A new flood warning is in effect even as many homes are still flooded from ice jams that formed three weeks ago.
"We want to make sure that we sort of balance not causing any panic, but we want folks to remain vigilant and remain alert to self-evacuate if necessary," said Tutt Gorman, Portland City Manager.
Temperatures in the 40s on Saturday caused some snow to melt and water levels to rise.
"We had a lot of activity upriver, a lot of debris, a lot of flood water and ice breaking up, and so luckily so far, that's not translated into new or additional flooding," said Gorman.
While not many businesses are seeing any flooding Monday, the clean up process is still very much alive.
The Portland Area Service Group had to gut its basement which was filled with a foot of water and move the food bank and clothing closet up the street to the Portland United Methodist Church.
"We're encouraged not to do too much because they are expecting more flood waters so we're kind of at a slow pace here," said Beckie Bates, director of the Portland Area Service Group.
While the situation is far from over, residents have already stepped up to help one another.
Even people from neighboring communities have donated to the recovery process.
There a fundraiser happening Friday night at VFW Post 4090 (1324 E. Bridge St) from 3 to 8 p.m.
For $10, you'll get a burger, fries and dessert.
The proceeds will go to the Portland Community Fund Association.
