The day after Christmas is a popular day for returning unwanted gifts, getting discounts, as well as spending gift cards.

"I got my husband an Apple Watch. He didn't want it or need it so I returned it," said Nancy Hansen, a gift-returner.

"It was 'The Nightmare before Christmas'. I got it twice, so I was just returning the second one that I got," said Kelsey Dietzen, another gift-returner.

Americans will return nearly $90 billion worth of gifts over the holidays, according to Optoro, a tech company that helps major retailers manage their returns.

"The lines got pretty long like after we got in there. there was quite a few people behind us," Dietzen said.

Each retailer has its own return and exchange policy and the rules can vary widely, including on holidays. Don't remove original packaging and hang on to the gift receipt, because customers can have up to 15 to 45 days to return the items.

The week after Christmas is also a good time to find big holiday deals and discounts, especially on Christmas wrapping and decor which shoppers took full advantage of.

"Lights, garland, any ornaments. Usually they go on sale the next day or a couple of days after that so I get stuff for next year," said Laurie Hall, a shopper

Shoppers are also spending and cashing in on their gift cards. Make sure the card is redeemed by the expiration date.

If you don't have a receipt, you might still be able to return the item, but you may only be given a gift card or store credit worth the item's price.

If you're lucky, you may be able to skip long lines at the mall. More than one-third of all retailer offer free shipping on returns, according to the National Retail Federation.
