On Tuesday night a 75-year-old woman had her purse stolen at the DeWitt Township Meijer.

The suspect stole the purse while the woman was getting help grabbing something off the shelves.

Katie Gestring was in the store and witnessed the chaos and aftermath of the incident.

"I was a couple aisles over and I saw this woman come out yelling purse and her purse and then I seen tons of meijer employees rushing towards the front and panic between other shoppers and everybody around trying to figure out what was going on."

The woman suspected of stealing the purse was able to get away in a vehicle driven by another man.

Brian Russell, DeWitt Charter Township's Police Chief says that women can try to avoid incidents like these by not taking a purse inside a store with them and by limiting the amount of important information they carry in their purse.

"Lots of times they don't just take the whole purse they take something out of the purse so keep alert to what's going on around you because even a zipped purse some of these guys or girls can get into em extremely fast."

Katie Gestring says she'll be more careful about what she does with her purse from now on.

"I think I'll probably carry it on my person from now on cause at any moment you can look away and just grab it so. Definitely I'll carry it on me from now on", said Gestring.
