The East Lansing Police Department is warning local businesses and community members of a phone scam, involving individuals who claim to be from Consumers Energy.
ELPD has received several reports from local business owners today who received calls from scammers who say they are behind on payments for services and will be cut off if they don't pay over the phone. The scammers in many cases have asked for the payments to be made using a Green Dot or other prepaid card.
ELPD has notified Consumers Energy of the phone scams and advise community members to not make payments or provide personal information over the phone to someone they do not know.
