Police talk 'stranger danger' safety

LANSING, Mich. — Students are starting to get out of school for the summer and with warm weather right around the corner they are going to want to be outside playing and hanging out with friends.

But police are warning kids to stay alert after a man tried luring a 12-year-old girl into his car earlier this week in Macomb County. She was walking to the bus stop at the time.

But police say the girl did the right thing, asking the man for the password, which her mother told her to use in the event someone else has to pick her up.

The girl's mom says she came up with the idea for a 'password' on social media.

Lansing Chief of Police says kidnappers have clever ways of luring kids to them.

"Any kind of job - 'hey help me find this' or 'can you give me directions here' or 'I lost my dog' is a common one now," said Chief Adam Kline. "But it's any kind of job or task they're asking you to do which'll usually lead you into trouble."

Police say parents should make sure their kids know to stay at an arm's length away from a stranger, especially near a vehicle or a home.

And try to always use the buddy system if possible.

Police are investigating the incident and looking for the suspect in Macomb.
