Police agencies across Michigan are going to be stepping up drunk driving enforcement this summer.
Today, at Comerica Park in Detroit, law enforcement and traffic safety officials kicked off the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign, with the focus on 'getting home safe," by using a designated driver.
In 2015, alcohol-involved traffic deaths increased 28-percent from 2014, from 107 to 138. Drug involved fatal crashes went up 19 percent, from 150 to 179 during the same period.
“A designated hitter might bring you home, but a sober designated driver can get you home safely after drinking,” said Michael L. Prince, director of the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning. “Law enforcement officers across the state will be on the lookout for drunk drivers this summer to help ensure everyone has the opportunity to enjoy the festivities safely.”
During the Forth of July period last year, 292 motorists were arrested for drunk driving, and there were 12 traffic deaths over the holiday period. Of those fatal crashes, 60-percent involved alcohol.
