Jackson Police are investigating a fatal shooting that happened at the Reed Manor apartment complex on Steward Avenue near Jackson High School.
It happened just before midnight Wednesday night.
The victim has been identified as 18-year-old Morris McBride Junior of Jackson. McBride Junior is not a resident of the Reed Manor apartment complex.
Police tell us McBride Junior was shot in the back once. They believe the shooter stood on VanBuren Street and shot into the apartment's courtyard.
McBride Junior was pronounced dead at the scene.
Margret Whitney lives in the apartment complex and says since an unarmed security guard was hired, things have calmed down a bit.
"They passed out the security guards phone number so all we have to do is call them if we have a problem in our hallway or in the building," said Whitney.
Across the street one neighbor feels as if though nothing has changed.
"I have a lot of grand children," said Margarita Tames who lives across the street. "If we can't sit outside in the front without them seeing the activities that go on or for me to able to sit out here and not feel safe for them, that's a problem."
The area is heavily patrolled by Jackson Police. The police departments director, Elmer Hitt, says that's not all.
"There is some stuff going on right now with the city on a lighting project that will actually bring some additional lighting into that area and do some other things with the asthetics of the area," said Hitt. "It'll hopefully address crime as well as bring a visible difference to the area."
The apartment complex along with surrounding homes have surveillance video police are looking over to help identify the suspect.
Candles burn at a memorial inside the complex, remembering a teenager who's life was cut all too short.
Police say the shooting wasn't random. The victim and suspect knew each other.
The search is still underway for the shooter.
