LANSING, Mich. — Lansing Police are trying to figure out who fired a gunshot into the Secretary of State branch near Frandor.

People who were inside at the time say they were just waiting in line when the chaos started.

"And all of a sudden we hear a gunshot behind us and people behind us started freaking out. I thought one girl was shot...nobody knew what was going on," Darryl Saddler said.

Police were dispatched to the Secretary of State office on East Michigan Ave. in Lansing around 11:00 a.m. No one was injured, but the shooting was a major cause for concern.

"It looks like it went outside to the inside. One shot, nobody hit and currently we are under investigation with our detective unit. This is not common, this is completely uncommon for the city of Lansing to have a shots fired like this," Sgt. Jeromy Churchill of Lansing Police said.

Witnesses said the staff took people into a room and behind counters to get out of harm's way.

"They started moving all of us into a back room for safety purposes and we stayed back there for a while....not really knowing what was going on," Saddler said.

The Secretary of State says workers are trained to do that in situations like this.

"We do do regular training with our staff on incidents like this. That's why they were able to respond so quickly and get everyone to safety. It's upsetting any time something happens that can put our customers or our staff in danger," Communications Director Shawn Starkey said.

Police tell us a man standing outside was shot at by someone in a car. They believe the two men have some sort of relationship and both left before police arrived. After looking at security video, police are looking for three people believed to have valuable information about the case. People inside at the time say they are happy everyone got out OK.

"it was kind of scary for me for a minute there. This is my first time ever being remotely close to a shooting alleged shooting of any type so yeah, it's the world we live in today, unfortunately," Saddler added.

Police want to talk to anyone who was in this plaza when the shooting happened. So if you were there, give them a call at (517) 483-4600. We'll keep you updated on the investigation.

The Secretary of State branch will be closed until further notice.
