A convenience store was collecting donations for a customer's funeral, but someone took advantage of the community's kindness.
The donation jar was about halfway full of money when it was stolen from the counter.
Ty Christopher Hunt frequented Greenwood Food and Beverage before he died suddenly last week. As seen in the video, a person in a hoodie and glasses took the donation jar. Now his loved ones are asking for help finding the person responsible.
"My first thought was wow, for real? Did you really just do this?" Hunt's sister, Theressa Cunningham said.
"We've seen so many things happen around Jackson County, but I never thought that we would see something as foul as what took place at this party store," his friend Christina Perry added.
The donation jar had been sitting on the counter for four days when it was taken last Saturday.
"The person came in and she had the other guy do something and then put it on her side, and just walked out with it. Its kind of sad you know? This town is sad," Donald Johnston, who works at the store said.
The donations were supposed to help pay for Hunt's funeral this Friday. Now the family is scrambling to raise more money to make it happen. His sister says she was more disappointed than angry.
"I feel sorry for her, really, truly, I do. For her to do something like that....something's not going on right in her world," she said.
The video has been shared hundreds of times on Facebook since the incident. Hunt's loved ones say that they'll remember him as a fun-loving, kind person who would do anything for you. They said they hope justice is served.
"I...I don't know what to think. You know, he was a good friend of mine. I'm going to miss him. I hope they catch her. I really do," Kenneth Michael Skinner said.
Jackson Police said a report was made about the incident and a possible suspect has been identified.
Management tells us this isn't the first time a donation jar has been stolen from the store. They aren't sure if they will put another one out after what happened.
