Police are asking that residents take safety precautions during the late evening to early morning hours due to a rash of strong armed robberies in the East Lansing-area.

The East Lansing Police Department and Michigan State University Police Department report that there have been several reports of strong armed robberies between midnight at 2 a.m.

The ELPD reports that groups of young juvenile males are targeting individuals walking alone or with only one other person to steal wallets, cell phones and other valuables. In some of the cases, police say the victims have been assaulted.

The departments say it is important for residents to remain vigilant and limit distractions, such as using a cell phone, and to travel in large groups or use a cab or public transportation to get around.

If you see anything suspicious, call the ELPD at 517-351-4220 or MSUPD at 517-355-2221. For emergencies, call 911.
