There's a job scam making the rounds targeting college students.
The Michigan State University Police Department says a recent scam is targeting msu.edu emails and job posting boards, individuals are being solicited for job opportunities.
However, part of the application or employment requires providing personal bank information for the scammer to deposit fraudulent checks into their account. The victim is then asked to wire funds or purchase gift cards and forward the funds or gift card number to the scammer.
Here are some tips to keep in mind:
1. If someone e-mails or contacts you electronically about a job and you never initiated contact with them, it's a scam.
2. No job requires you to pay them, in gift cards, cash, etc.
3. MSU does not randomly contact people via e-mail for employment. If you receive any such correspondence from MSU, it is a scam. If you receive any solicitation from MSU and aren't sure, call that Department to verify.
