Getting pulled over by police is probably not on anyone's Christmas wish list, but for some up north Wednesday, being stopped by an officer had its perks.
Officer James Scroggin has worked for the Gerrish Township Police Department for over two years.
Pulling drivers over and giving out tickets is what he does every day.
But on Wednesday, he was giving away something else.
"Today instead of giving civil infractions out, we're giving turkeys out."
It's a tradition started by the Roscommon County Sheriff's Department, with other departments helping out.
The Houghton Lake and Roscommon Rotary Clubs raise money for this event, this year raising $1,500 - enough to buy 100 turkeys.
"Giving that Christmas spirit out to the community is so fulfilling. We really enjoy doing it."
But new this year, was a special guest.
"I brought an inmate hoping you can spread some holiday cheer."
The drivers being pulled over only had minor violations.
"It's really hard to keep a straight face because they can't believe that they're getting pulled over for a snow-covered plate or minor things like that that typically want to be pulled over for."
Meaning they weren't too pleased with being stopped.
"He's going to be really happy with a turkey."
Until..
"Oh wow thank you!"
"Oh my gosh thank you so much."
"No way! Thank you!"
And while Officer Scroggin was making their day, little did they know, they were also making his.
"People's reaction is awesome and this time of year it's nice to give them something to be happy about."
