LANSING, Mich. — More than 20,000 car crashes in Michigan in 2017 were caused by distracted driving…almost double the crashes from the year before.
April is distracted driving month, and police are cracking down on drivers who aren't focused on the road.
They're taking part in a distracted driving mobilization period.
Usually, they're looking out for speeding, reckless driving and tailgating, but for the next week, they're keeping an eye out for drivers who might be distracted behind the wheel.
"When you're traveling 70 miles an hour down a highway, even taking your eyes off the road for a split second can make all the difference in the world, and decrease your reaction time to stop and prevent being involved in a traffic crash,” said Lieutenant Darren Green of the Michigan State Police. “Distracted driving plays a lot of roles in traffic crashes and result in a lot of injuries or even fatalities."
Distracted driving doesn't just mean texting while driving.
Eating, grooming, reading, and even changing the station on your radio dial can take your focus away from the road.
The distracted driving mobilization period goes from today thru Monday, April 15th.
