LANSING, Mich. — The Lansing Police Commission is holding a meeting in which residents are addressing the commission in regards to the controversial arrest of a 16-year-old African-American girl.

Tuesday's night's meeting is being attended by approximately one-hundred residents.

Many are stressing the need for officers to understand their role to deescalate highly contentious situations.

Some of those addressing the commission have also stated that they want Lansing Police officers to be "the voice of reason" in volatile situations.

The people who have been addressing the commission have expressed shock and anger over the amount of force used by the arresting officer.

Several people have mentioned that the officer should be fired, but many more believe the situation needs to be addressed as quickly as possible and have questioned 90 days currently scheduled by the Lansing Police Department in their investigation of the incident.

"Why are children so afraid?"

That question seems to be a common theme and question being asked by those addressing the commission.

Tuesday night's meeting began at 5:30 p.m.
