"Somebody was cooking meth in my neighborhood right behind my house!" Bill Austin said in disbelief.
He lives down the street from the garage where Blackman-Leoni Township Police found a hot plate, gas generator, scale, meth and an active one pot meth lab.
The garage was behind the home police were called to for a report of domestic assault Wednesday night.
It's a scene Blackman-Leoni Township Police say they don't normally just run into.
Deputy Director of Support Services, Chris Boulter, explained, "It is a process that's really quick to complete, usually only about 45 minutes or so. So, it's from the inception to the completion of it, something that is not normal for us to just stumble upon."
The house is located just a half mile away from Michigan Center High School, which Boulter told Fox 47 News increases the seriousness of the charges.
"It's an environmental impact that neighbors, that people who reside in that area have to deal with. It's cleanup that takes many many hours," he explained.
The Sheriff's Office, Napoleon Township and the Jackson Narcotics Enforcement Team (JNET) also responded to help dismantle and clean up the lab, which included 5 more used one pots.
JNET told us they've received similar calls about 25-30 times in just the past three months.
Boulter said that's probably because manufacturing the drug isn't that difficult.
"All these products can be purchased at your local grocery store or hardware store," he explained. "So, it's really easy for somebody with an internet connection and a little bit of intelligence to manufacture something that is very illicit."
Actions that have neighbors worried.
"You don't know what people are doing in your neighborhood. You think you're safe and, you know, you never know," Austin said.
Police say the two men are expected to be arraigned Thursday on charges of possession of meth components, manufacturing meth and possession. They're also facing charged of having a scanner during the commission of a crime.
One of them men has a previous drug conviction.
