GM Plant shutting down for a month

For 37 days, the Delta Assembly Plant will be under construction.

"We're gonna be down in May for some re-tooling and putting some expansion and investment back into the plant, so we can build future product," explained UAW Local 602 President Bill Reed.

Paving the way to add something else to the line already rolling out the Chevy Traverse, Buick Enclave and GMC Acadia.

What new product? Reed can't say.

"I can't talk about, but we're very excited about what's coming up in the future," he said.

And, we know there's room for the new product. Remember in January when we told you the production of the 2017 GMC Acadia was moving to Spring Hill, TN; but that Delta workers had no need to worry?

"Something else will go in its place. I'm very confident. I wouldn't be concerned," explained Rick Spina, Chief Engineer of GM Crossover Vehicles.

And today, Reed agreed, "I'd say the way Lansing is going, I would expect to have something here. I mean we are the car capital of the world."

Plus, GM recently invested a half a billion dollars in the Delta Plant.

So, from May 1st to June 6th, what will the 2800 Delta workers be up to?

"We've got some training going on. So, some of the employees will be back for classes and doing some of those types of things. Some are gonna take the lay off and have a nice start to the summer," Reed said.

He promises no interruption in pay.

"Now that we have some down time to catch up on some things we've needed to do. So, it's a great opportunity to take some initiative to that ," he said.

To ensure production is even better moving forward.

While the GM workers won't be losing money, the shutdown is bad news for suppliers.

An employee at one Supplier told us he's been informed he'll be laid off for two months during the shutdown.
