Several pets are dead and two people are out of their home following a late night fire at a Jackson apartment complex.
It happened around 9:30 p.m. Sunday August, 13 at the Abbey Villas apartment complex.
Firefighters believe the fire started in the kitchen area of a third floor apartment. The fire was contained to one apartment. Heavy smoke required firefighters to evacuate the entire building, but crews tell News 10 getting everyone out safely was a challenge. Firefighters say they initially did have enough manpower and had to call in 3 additional fire departments. Crews then went through the 4-story building, floor by floor trying to evacuate everyone.
The building sustained heavy smoke and water damage. Residents were able to return to their apartments Monday morning.
No one was injured in the fire, however two dogs and two cats who were inside the apartment where the fire started were killed.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
