LANSING, Mich. — A locally owned, small-town business is the last place you expect thieves to strike.
Security video showing thieves stealing goods from a Perry business (source, Moriah Smith). But that's exactly what happened to Moriah Smith's Swan Creek Candle shop just a few days ago.
"I pulled in the driveway and I noticed that they were gone. So I went and looked on the footage, and that's when I saw what happened," Smith recalled.
Smith saw what looks to be a woman and a man get out of a car around 3:45 Monday morning. The two are seen picking up boxes and taking them to the car, one even wearing a headlamp, and then making a getaway.
"I was just shocked that somebody would do that. I know that I should not have put that out there but I did and I kind of felt violated...just because you know, that's our own little space back there and somebody intruded."
The thieves took around $400 worth of damaged goods and things the business was planning to donate. Smith says she won't make the same mistake again and hopes some good will come out of this.
"I just don't want this to happen to anybody else," she said. "I might not have reported it had it just been us but the more I thought about it, I didn't want it to happen to anybody at their home or any other businesses. It's more of just a protection of the community."
The footage pretty much speaks for itself. But Smith has some words for the burglars:
"Just please don't steal from people. It's not a good thing."
Smith made a police report about the situation. We'll let you know if they make any arrests.
If you recognize the people or have any information, call the Perry Police Department at (517) 625-3535.
