Airlines saw an increase in ticket sales as people worked to get to Detroit to honor the queen of soul.

When you take a look at where people are driving and flying from one thing is clear.  Aretha Franklin had respect not only all over the country but all over the world.

When news broke that Aretha Franklin passed away, Charlotte Price and her friends decided they needed to hit the road to pay tribute. They drove from Columbus, Ohio.

“I grew up listening to Aretha Franklin, and the lyrics to her songs are as relevant today as they were back then,” said Price.

They say Aretha didn’t just create music they love, but broke down barriers for women and African Americans.  Musician and civil rights activist Jennifer Jones traveled from New Orleans in jazz funeral attire to honor the Queen of Soul.

“That is the kind of person who has given her entire life to humankind,” said Jones.

“I am representing so many Italians,” said Cheryl Porter.

Porter may be among those who made the longest trip. She flew to Detroit Metro from Italy.

“With her powerful voice she gave us the power to feel like we are in control,” said Porter.

Porter now is a professional opera singer who has traveled the world. She says she realizes Aretha Franklin’s talent transcends genres.  She sees Aretha’s influence in her work.  She had to be here to honor the woman who made her amazing career possible.

“A part of me just needed to say, Good bye Aretha and thank you,” said Porter.
