Parma condemns 4-year-old's wheelchair ramp

Posted

Parma Township says the ramp to help 4-year-old Mason in and out of his home is too steep.

"I honestly think it looks pretty good. It's extremely sturdy and I'm still thankful for all the help we had in getting it put up here," Mason's Dad, Dustin Lloyd said.

He began building the ramp with a private contractor as soon as he learned his son would temporarily be in a wheelchair after he was hit by a car in May.

"There's a lot of manual labor involved in getting it built and getting it built as quick as we did, so that he has something to get in and out of the house," Lloyd said. "You know, he's 4, he's not gonna be running himself up and down this."

But, the Building Inspector and Township Supervisor, Wendy Chamberlain, took a look on Saturday.

"They decided that it wasn't up to their code. And quite rudely, decided that they wanted to condemn it," Lloyd explained.

Chamberlain told FOX 47 News Lloyd didn't get a permit and the ramp doesn't meet the state's code of a 1:8 ratio or the Townships of 1:12, meaning for every one inch in height, the ramp needed to extend 12 inches in length.

"With their measurements, they want this ramp 32 feet long and then you think okay now we're out in the middle of the driveway," Lloyd said.

And, he added, that would be less than 15 feet from the road.

"That's the whole thing, is we're having a kid that was in the road and got hit, trying to heal and Parma pretty much wants us to put the other kids out there," Lloyd said.

He has until July 4th to reconfigure the ramp, but said he'll leave it, especially because Mason should be walking in the next 4 to 6 months.

"I look at it as this is where I live nobody can tell me I can't have it the way I have it," Lloyd said.

Lloyd told FOX 47 News a few construction companies have offered to fix the ramp for free to end the argument, He's speaking with them Monday tonight. And, he told FOX 47 News Mason should get a hard cast Tuesday and start walking on it in the next few weeks.

The Jackson County Sheriff's Office is still investigating the hit-and-run. Call police if you have any information on the driver at (517) 768-7900.
