LANSING, Mich. — A project to develop park trails in Ingham county is on hold because it's home to a protected species.
The slipper shell and snuffbox mussels are an endangered species.
The county has to make sure they're not impacting the creatures' habitat before they extend these park trails.
The trails are along Cambridge and Moores River Drive in Lansing, south of the Grand River.
The Committee of Ways and Means met Friday morning to discuss funding and grant money for the trails.
$8 million was allocated to go towards the trail system which is an undeveloped area.
"The parks department would have to do additional testing and studies to figure out what would be the impact of their habitat if we were to continue," said Patricia Spitzley, Chair of the Committee of Ways and Means.
Until a full environmental impact report is completed, the project will be stopped.
The project is predicted to pick back up next year as long as the impact report comes back with positive results for the committee.
