LANSING, Mich. — There are always a few busing changes that need to be made for various reasons at the start of the school year.
Some parents in St. Johns are demanding a change before classes start on Monday.
They reached out to News 10 when they weren't getting the answers they wanted from the district.
"St. Johns School District decided to move our bus stop so that our 50 plus school-age children are basically standing on Parks Road," parent Ann McCourt said.
A gazebo and playground a few hundred feet inside the Meadows of St. Johns is where kids used to get on the school bus. That is, until this year.
"I think they're out of their minds. I am extremely concerned. I think having the bus stop pretty much on Parks Road...is pretty much an accident waiting to happen," parent Amber Pergl said.
Now, kids are boarding just inside the mobile home park. Parents say more than fifty kids board the bus on any given morning, which is too many for the size of the sidewalk. Not to mention how busy Parks Road is, which is not far from the stop.
"The speed limit is 55 miles-per-hour....no. We have seen people drive 65, 70 plus miles-per-hour. It is the most unsafe position to have a bus stop in," McCourt said.
Parents say they've complained to the district, but say that's not getting them anywhere.
"It makes you stop and think. Are they even thinking about our children?" McCourt said. "It would seem that the answer would be no at this point."
"I believe the school does not have the children's best interest in mind. They are putting them in direct danger," Pergl added.
News 10 reached out to St. Johns superintendent. He told us the bus stop was actually moved "for the kid's safety," and they will "reevaluate" once the school year begins.
According to parents, the district told them the bus stop was moved away from the gazebo to keep kids from crossing the street to get to the playground.
The superintendent was not available for an interview Friday.
