LANSING, Mich. — The organizers of Charlotte's Frontier Days Festival are apologizing to people who were upset to see the Confederate flag in the parade this past weekend.

The presence of the Confederate flag at the Frontier Days parade this past weekend has struck controversy.A few people reached out to Fox 47 regarding the presence of the Confederate flag at the Frontier Days parade.

Although, Fox 47 was unable to get someone to speak on camera, the issue seems to divide a lot of people, which begs the question "does the Confederate flag have a place at events like this?"

The Confederate flag, being carried by the Mid-Michigan Mounted Color Guard while in the parade brought out a lot of opinions. Aside from the messages Fox 47 received, a Facebook post with a picture of the Confederate flag in the parade generated a lot of comments and viewpoints.

Some people supported the flag making an appearance saying it's a part of the United States' history and that banning it would violate the First Amendment, while others said it's offensive and this piece of history should be kept in the past.

In a statement, the Frontier Days Board of Directors said they "understand the concerns and feelings" that some had about the flag and go on to say "the mission of the color guard is to bring all of these beautiful banners before the public eye to serve as a reminder of all the battles fought and won so that we might enjoy the freedom and liberty that we have today." They then go on to apologize to those who were upset.

Fox 47 also spoke briefly with the Mid-Michigan Mounted Color Guard who said they didn't want to upset anyone and stressed that they are a "historical" group.
