HOLT, Mich. — Opening arguments have begun Tuesday in the trial for the man accused of killing his lover's husband in Holt earlier this year.
Prosecutors say that Jacob Ficher is charged with open murder and conspiracy to commit murder in the death of Ammar Al-Yasari.
Asst. Prosecuting Attorney, Nicole Matusko, said in opening arguments, "Despite being married to another person, Jacob Ficher bought a ring and began to plan his life together with Bdour. But there was one person in the way of that life. Ammar Al-yasari."
Ingham County Prosecuting Attorney saying Jacob Ficher's relationship with Ammar Al-Yasari's wife, Bdour, and his hatred for the victim, led him to commit the gruesome murder, a murder the court says was premeditated.
Al-Yasari was found dead in his home on Glennberry Drive on Feb. 4.
His wife, Bdour Al-Yasari is currently awaiting trial on murder and conspiracy charges.
Six witnesses were called to the stand on Tuesday, including first responders and a medical examiner who says Ammar suffered 24 chop wounds to the head, face, and neck.
The examiner said that a hatchet or an axe could have produced that type of injury.
The prosecution was able to show that two days after Ammar Al-Yasari was doused in bleach, that law enforcement found a Kroger receipt detailing the purchase of camp axe and a bottle of bleach.
The defense questioned the Medical Examiner, asking whether or not he could say for sure what kind of weapon was used, and the M.E. responded no, but if had to be strong enough to break bone and have a sharpened edge.
A detective was asked to show evidence to the jury of a blood-soaked coat of the victim.
Ammar's sister watching in the courtroom fell to her knees, leading to Judge Draganchuck to excuse the jury for a moment.
A jury was seated in Ficher's trial on Monday, Nov. 4.
The trial is happening in Ingham County Circuit Court Judge Joyce Draganchuck's courtroom.
