LANSING, Mich. — What does it mean to be a fan?
That's the question Ben Hartnell is asking Spartan fans after his 9-year-old son penned a letter defending Michigan State's football team and coach Mark Dantonio.
Hartnell's son, Fraser Hartnell, wrote a four-page letter following Saturday's blowout loss to Michigan in Ann Arbor.
It still has dad in awe.
Ben Hartnell said Fraser disappeared after watching the game in the family's Westerville, Ohio home and was later found in his room, at his desk, writing.
"He said he felt he needed to write a letter to everyone because he didn't like hearing that (MSU fans) were angry," Ben Hartnell said.
Fraser spent four days crafting the letter, addressed to Dantonio, quarterback Brian Lewerke and the overall fan base.
And much to the family's surprise, the letter has gone viral.

Fraser writes "a lot of MSU people who are sad right now need smiles."
As word spread Wednesday about the letter, Lewerke reacted on Twitter with the following post: "Thanks Fraser, you definitely put a smile on my face!"
Ken Mannie, MSU's strength and conditioning coach, also weighed in online.
"Fraser is an educator in his own right, Dr. Hartnell," Mannie tweeted to Fraser's dad. "Obviously cut from the right cloth."
