OLIVET, Mich — Olivet College will present work by Jesse M. Bell ’00, Milie Funk ’15, Pamela Gleave ’99, Salina Kalnins ’97 and Mike Vedder ’82 in the Alumni Homecoming Art Exhibition. The exhibit will be open Oct. 3-31 with an artists’ reception on Oct. 12, 5-7 p.m. during the Homecoming schedule of events. The display and reception will be held at the Kresge Foundation Art Gallery, located in the Riethmiller Blackman Art Building at Olivet College, 320 S. Main St. The gallery is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public.
Jesse M. Bell ’00 is a contemporary abstract painter working and living in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In his practice, Bell strives to condense his visual language into two-dimensional imagery and to create paintings that suggest a story or an event, or convey a memory, situation or scenario.
Milie Funk ’15 has been quilting since 2008 when she began working for her mother’s T-shirt quilt company. She continued to develop her quilting skills during high school and college, and today she focuses in long-arm quilting. Funk is inspired by Japanese wood block prints and traditional tattoo design, as the bold lines featured in these translate well to quilting as a medium.
Pamela Gleave ’99 is an award-winning artist and photographer from Michigan. She works in oils, pastel, gouache painting, photography and carbon dust drawings. She is also a
sculptor. Her latest projects involve paintings of moth specimens and sculptures of tango dancers.
Salina Kalnins ’97 uses her painting skills and love of nature and the ocean to paint boats onto maps. She combines detailed boats, lighthouses or beach scenes with appropriate markings of nautical charts. Her paintings are created by using acrylic paint and other various mixed media directly onto the surfaces of nautical maps.
Mike Vedder’s ’82 artistic talents were apparent by age 5. He studied drawing, painting and pottery in high school and woodcutting, painting, sculpture, drawing and constructions in college. Today, Vedder practices in Grand Blanc.
