LANSING, Mich. — Olivet College has announced the appointment of Albert Rosenthaler ’80 and David D. Shufelt Jr.’88 to its Board of Trustees. Rosenthaler and Shufelt, two alumni of the College, will join the board with a commitment to providing a successful educational experience for all students.

“I am very pleased to have Albert and Dave join the Board of Trustees,” said President Steven M. Corey, Ph.D. “Both men are distinguished alumni, leaders in their respective industries and strong examples of the College’s mission in their professional and civil work. We are fortunate to have dedicated alumni and friends who are strongly committed to the institution and its mission.”

Albert Rosenthaler ’80

Albert Rosenthaler ’80 joined Liberty in April of 2002 and is currently chief corporate development officer of Liberty Media Corporation, Qurate Retail, Inc., Liberty TripAdvisor Holdings, Inc., Liberty Broadband Corporation, and GCI Liberty, Inc. Rosenthaler serves on the LibertyGives committee. He is also a board member of TripAdvisor, Inc. Before joining Liberty, Rosenthaler was a tax partner at Arthur Andersen LLP where he was a member of the firm’s corporate transactions and oil and gas tax teams. He specialized in domestic and international organizations and mergers and acquisitions for clients engaged in the cable television, telecom and natural resource industries.

Rosenthaler holds a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics from Olivet College and a Masters of Accounting Science with an emphasis in taxation from the University of Illinois. He has been involved with various not-for-profit organizations, including Big Brothers Big Sisters, Creek Hockey Club and Mile High United Way.

“I enjoyed my time at Olivet,” Rosenthaler said. “The direct access to professors and education provided has proven invaluable. It’s great to be able to give back to the College.”

David D. Shufelt Jr. ’88

David D. Shufelt Jr. ’88 owns several businesses, including 600+ apartments in the Kalamazoo and Battle Creek areas. He also owns Kalamazoo F.C., the semi-pro soccer team that plays in the NPSL, the third tier of US Soccer. Shufelt partnered Kalamazoo F.C. with several local charities, and over the course of their first season, donated approximately $8,000 collectively. Giving back to the community has always been a priority for Shufelt. He also coaches both men’s and women’s soccer at Portage Northern High School and is in his seventh season as the coach.

As an entrepreneur, Shufelt also owns several other smaller businesses, including carpet cleaning, tub refinishing, HVAC, pest control and lawn service. Prior to these ventures, he worked for several financial services companies in the role of a wholesaler. Shufelt’s biggest accomplishment during this career was serving as the regional vice president for Golden Rule/One America Insurance. He worked there for 19 years and was responsible for the upper Midwest region. For 14 years of his time with One America, Shufelt was the company’s top salesperson.

Shufelt and his wife, Melissa (Green) Shufelt are both 1988 graduates of Olivet College. They have three sons, David (26), Alexander (25) and Jacob (20), and they live in Kalamazoo. As alumni, both Dave and Melissa are excited to get involved with their alma mater where they spent four of the best years of their lives.

“I am excited to be able to give back to Olivet College, the institution that prepared me for the business world,” Shufelt said. “These changing and uncertain times present a great opportunity and challenge to, hopefully, bring ideas and solutions to help Olivet College prosper today and in the future.”
