LANSING, Mich. — Lansing Police said the driver in Thursday morning’s fatal crash was a 37-year-old man, and they believe he was speeding.
Old Oakland neighbors spent Thursday cleaning up after a Lansing man died after he crashed his car.His car went airborne and broke into several pieces when it hit a tree on Oakland Avenue.
We spoke to people in that neighborhood
"It was a boom, and I figured somebody hit something. And it was pretty awful," said Tammy Morris.
Morris and Karen Jackson were two of many people in the Old Oakland neighborhood who watched in shock as first responders dealt with Thursday morning's crash.
"They were here for a good three hours working the scene,” said Jackson. “We all kind of just tried to do what we could. I know I pray...we pray for the family today."
The neighbors tell News 10 that the driver had to be going at least 100 miles per hour. The accident caused extensive damage to their truck and their property. They say they'll be cleaning for days.
"It ended up in the fence hit our truck, hit a light post, hit a tree, so it was awful,” said Morris. “We have like half the light pole in our yard...in our backyard.
Morris and Jackson spent all morning and afternoon picking up shards of glass, metal, and wood, cleaning up reminders of a terrible scene.
"It’s so tragic what happened here, and we feel so horrible for the family," said Morris.
"This shakes you up,” said Jackson. “One second you're here, and the next you're gone."
The driver's name will be released once the family has been notified.
