How often do you pick up the phone while driving? Maybe even send a quick text message behind the wheel?
Well, authorities say now is the time to break that habit for good.
April is 'Distracted Driving Awareness" month, and Michigan State Police and local officers are taking this deadly problem head on.
The latest numbers from the CDC show that over 8 people are killed every day in the U.S. in crashes that involve a distracted driver.
But, a lot of people just don't want to put down the phone. Texting and driving means you're 23 times more likely to get in crash.
"Focusing on their phone leads to red light violations, speeding, no turn on red and that kind of stuff, so one typically leads to the other," says East Lansing Police Lt. Scott Wriggelsworth.
Plus, it's illegal to text behind the wheel in Michigan. You'll have to pay $100 for a first time offense if you're caught, and after that it's $200.
Another good reason to keep your eyes on the road? You've seen the orange barrels everywhere, it's construction season in Michigan.
Local officers say it's easy to spot someone who isn't paying attention.
Whether it's texting, putting on make up or eating in the car, it's all dangerous.
The National Safety Council is encouraging people to take a pledge to stop distracted driving.
You can dedicate that pledge to your children, spouse, or anyone in your life.
