JACKSON, Mich. — The City of Jackson police have confirmed an officer-involved shooting in the city.
The officer who was involved has been treated at a hospital in Jackson and has been released.
He drove himself because he had an injury to his leg from falling after being shot at.
Officers responded after receiving a 911 call about a domestic disturbance on Warwick Court at Southridge Park Townhomes at South Cooper and East Franklin.
It happened around 2:42 a.m.
The 911 caller, who was female, told dispatch that a man that she knew was outside her door and wouldn't leave. She also said that he was known to have a gun.
When officers arrived, they saw the suspect running through the complex.
One officer was able to track the suspect outside one of the buildings and they exchanged gunfire.
At that time, two more Jackson Police Department officers got involved.
The suspect was hit and died at the scene. He was 29 years old and from Jackson. His name has not yet been released but police say it might be released Tuesday.
“The officers were wearing body cameras. I've had an opportunity to review some of that and the suspect did fire at the officer first, the officer initially did return fire,” said Elmer Hitt, Jackson Police Department chief.
The News 10 crew was on the scene first and saw a heavy police presence in the neighborhood.
Michigan State Police, Ingham County Sheriff, and Jackson County Disaster Assistance Response Team were all on the scene.
Police say this is still an open investigation.
