A 67-year-old northwestern Indiana man has died after he drove into the path of an Amtrak passenger train.
Michigan City police say the local man was pronounced dead at the scene following the crash about 7:30 a.m. Thursday. His name wasn't immediately released. He was the only person in the car.
Police say the westbound train carrying 198 passengers was traveling 59 mph at impact and pushed the car about 500 yards down the tracks. No one aboard the train was injured.
Police say some of the train's passengers were bused to a nearby South Shore commuter rail station to complete their trip to Chicago. Amtrak bused others to Chicago.
