Northwest Community Schools has canceled school Friday after a student made a threat through social media.

The district's phones were down Thursday night, according to its Facebook post.

"At this time the phone notification system is not working properly. Calls will be made informing of school cancellation once the system is restored," the district posted at 9:53 p.m. Thursday.

Earlier Thursday night, the superintendent took to the district's social media accounts to let parents and students know about the threat.

"I just want to send out a message to make you aware that a high school student has stated to “shoot up the school” on Friday through social media. The NW Admin Team, Blackman Police Dept, and Jackson County Sherriff’s Dept are actively pursuing the situation to apprehend," Superintendent Geoff Bontrager posted on the district's Facebook page Thursday night.
